Periodontics – State-of-the-Art Solutions for Gum Disease
Periodontics focuses on the prevention and treatment of gum disease, which is the gradual destruction of the gums and the underlying bone caused by the bacteria in accumulated plaque. If left untreated, periodontal disease can cause a range of symptoms including pain, bad breath, swollen or bleeding gums, and even tooth loss. The disease’s progression can be slowed or arrested with proper treatment.
Periodontal Treatment Options
Dental Cleaning (Prophy)- For patients with good oral hygiene or mild gingivitis. These patients have little or no bleeding when brushing or flossing.
Scaling and root planing – For patients with mild periodontitis, deep scaling and root planing procedure may be all that is needed to halt the disease’s progression. The procedure involves removing plaque and tartar from the crown and root surfaces of the teeth using hand instruments (scalers) and an ultrasonic scaler. In some instances patient will need local anesthesia, however in most instances, a topical anesthetic gel can be used. On occasion we may apply a local antibiotic directly into the periodontal pocket, to destroy any remaining harmful bacteria.
